How Do Solar Panels Work?

Each solar panel is made up of small photovoltaic (PV) cells which absorb photons emitted from the sun. This generates free electricity through the photovoltaic effect for use in your home.

The electricity generated can also be stored in a battery and released when you need it.

Huge thanks to Brian at 021 Electrician. We lost power to our sockets late on a Sunday night when the RCD tripped and seemed totally jammed. I rang the 24 hr emergency number and Brian answered the call straightaway. I explained my issue and he asked for a few photos of the fuse board and patiently talked me through how to safely get the switch back up and test the circuits. He even stayed online until we had everything working perfectly again. It is so rare to find a tradesman that responsive and genuinely helpful late on a weekend. Absolutely top-class service, I highly recommend him to anyone around East Cork.

A trip switch went off on Sunday night around midnight. All lights went out & burglar alarm went off. I tried to turn on relevant trip switch but it would not turn back on. I had to do something as next door neighbour had leaving cert exam next day. I knew it would be expensive to get an electrician in an emergency but had no choice. I googled “electrician cork emergency”. The first 24 hour service number I rang just rang out & nobody rang back. The second number I rang was 021 Electrician and Brian answered within a few rings. I explained problem & he said that if he had to call out he would have to charge so he would talk me through fix. First suggestion did not work so Brian kept going with more suggestions until lights came back on & alarm went off. I was very thankful & insisted on paying but Brian would not take any money. Unbelievable service!! I will definitely use 021 Electrician in future

A special thank you to all at 021 Electrician for their amazing work during a recent solar install and electrical upgrade. Very professional work done by Killian, Cian & Kian. These lads were a pleasure to have in our home. The whole experience was seamless due to their time, efforts and workmanship on the job. We could see care and attention taken which was reflected in the final results. Delighted to have our home retrofitted. Also, thank you to Brian in the office for being so kind and helpful. FAQ’s

Some of the most frequent questions we get asked.

For a typical 3-bedroom semi-detached home, a solar PV system (roughly 10 panels or 4.4 kWp) generally costs between €8,000 and €12,000 before grants. With current incentives and 0% VAT, many homeowners see an out-of-pocket cost closer to €5,500 – €7,000.

As of early 2026, the SEAI Solar PV grant is capped at €1,800 for eligible systems. Currently, there is no additional grant available for battery storage, so support applies only to solar PV installations.

Yes. The 0% VAT rate on the supply and installation of solar panels for private dwellings remains in place for 2026, providing an immediate saving of roughly 13.5% compared to previous years.

Absolutely. Solar PV panels run on daylight, not direct heat or constant “holiday sun.” Even on a typical overcast Irish day, panels can still generate 10% to 25% of their rated capacity. Ireland’s cool, temperate climate actually helps efficiency, as panels can underperform in extreme heat.

Most Irish households save between 30% and 70% on their annual electricity bills. By using high-energy appliances (washing machines, dishwashers) during daylight hours, you maximise your “self-consumption” and minimise what you buy from the grid.

Yes, through the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG). Major suppliers like Pinergy, Energia, and Electric Ireland pay customers for excess energy sent back to the grid. Rates in 2026 typically range from 18c to 25c per kWh.

Very little. Because Ireland gets plenty of rain, your panels are mostly self-cleaning. However, a professional check-over every 2 to 3 years is recommended to ensure the inverter is healthy and the wiring is secure.
